Project #33 - Birthday Commission

In early Summer my daughter commissioned a Birthday gift for her friend of many many years (met in Youth Soccer and have been close friends ever since). I rarely do “commission” work as I whittle for my own enjoyment not as a job, but the subject appealed to me and I can’t really refuse my daughter any way. ;-{)}

Her friend, a Scientist and talented crafts person in her own right (baker, fiber artist …) is very fond of her pet Corgi’s, so a whittled one seemed an obvious choice. Having had dog’s my entire life I am very familiar with the general canine form, but Corgi’s have a unique look and not being super familiar with the breed I opted to seek out and acquire a pattern to assist with the proportions.

It took a bit to get the look right, but, great fun and am pretty happy with the end result! We wanted to maintain the natural wood look and not use any paint. As she has a small child, I went with a natural, food safe, hand-rubbed Bee’s Wax finish.
