Project #32 - Pelican

Life events! In May of 2022, I retired (early) from the Tech Industry after 36 years (27 for the same Company) as a Software Engineer. It was my goal since I graduated from University to retire at 55 while still young enough to enjoy it! Well it ended up 59, but still made the “young/healthy enough” part!!

I have not been whittling as much as I had expected, but, have not been idle either. We have made good on our plans to travel more with our trailer. Stayed in a Lighthouse and a Castle. Attended the largest Hot Air Balloon Festival in the Northeast (Adirondack Balloon Festival), the last time we attended we were still in College. Started a new hobby (like I needed more), restoring/maintaining a 1941 Farmall H tractor. And, made good on working through some of the items on the home repair/maintenance list.

While I have not been good at keeping this site updated, I have still completed several new projects which I will be adding over the next day or so.

First up this little stylized Pelican.

Pelican - Completed on May 31st

Ran into this little guy on the web and knew I wanted to recreate a copy for myself.

Roughing out the shape with a bandsaw was a definite bonus here, there was a lot of waste wood to remove and some pretty thin overhung areas (beak).

Overall, a quick and satisfying project. Could be placed on any number of objects, beyond the pier post top I went with, for variety in future carves.
